How to keep food lasting for longer

It can be incredibly wasteful and frustrating when the food in your fridge goes off before you have to chance to eat it. It is much better to know how to make your food last longer to avoid waste which will help the planet and save you money. There are lots of simple tricks and hacks to make your food last longer and therefore save money. There is so much food waste in the world so following these tips will not only help you keep food fresh and keep your wallet healthy.

Meat

This is one of the most expensive options out there when you are doing your food shopping so letting it go to waste is a big problem. One way in which you can avoid this is to put your meat in the freezer. Many people worry about losing the quality of their meat when they do this. However, even with the best quality of meat, you can still freeze it, if you use a resealable plastic bag. People have asked if you can freeze wagyu beef? The answer is yes and as long as you defrost it properly, you won’t lose any quality.

Fruit

You should keep your bananas separate from other fruit. This may seem like an odd statement, but bananas produce a lot of ethylene gas. This gas breaks down other fruit and makes them go off much quicker. A good tip is to wrap the crown of a bunch of bananas, and it will elongate their shelf life allowing you to enjoy the banana-y goodness for longer.

Dry goods

One way to look after your loose dry goods, like pasta and rice, is to store them in airtight containers. Things like jars and plastic boxes are perfect for this as they keep out mites and insects ensuring that you don’t get ill from them. They can also make great kitchen decorations, so it is worth investing in.

Berries

Berries are one of the most popular fruits on the market. However, their short shelf-life can mean that they are often wasted or thrown away. You can ensure that they stay fresh by mixing one part distilled vinegar with ten parts water to wash your berries in. You should not be able to taste the vinegar on the fruit, but it can make fruits like strawberries last up to two weeks longer.

Herbs

Fresh herbs can make any of your dishes at home, restaurant quality. However, they often go off quickly and require a lot of maintenance to ensure they do not die quickly. One way to combat this is to freeze them in olive oil. This not only portions out your olive oil but keeps your herbs ready for you to use when you start cooking. Just melt the cube in your pan and enjoy.

Fresh food

There is a lot of waste out there and it can be hard to make sure that you do not contribute to it. You can try and budget your spending but it is likely that you will still waste food. However, following simple tips like this can make sure that you keep your food fresher for longer.
