The Silver Lining

the silver liningFebruary 3, 1985

It’s hard for me to even look at that date…the date that my mother passed away from breast cancer. It was thirty years ago, yet I miss her like it was yesterday. Her journey was a difficult one.

Norma M. Lubin was diagnosed with breast cancer on May 26, 1980…exactly 35 years from the day that I write this. The day has been etched in my memory…it was the day after my wedding. What she didn’t know at the time was that the disease had already progressed to her lymph nodes and blood….and the doctor didn’t bother to check before he performed a double mastectomy…that it was already too late.

She was a strong woman who took control from the moment she received the news. From treatments to making certain that we were all comforted in her passing, my mother always thought of us. When traditional medicine held no more help, she turned to macrobiotics (when allowed her a few more years), and even went to the funeral parlor to choose and pay for her final goodbye, knowing that my dad would have a difficult time of this.

Other than our family

There was no support, no groups, no books, no help…this was 1985.

There are 250,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. each year. With early detection, there is more hope today than there was back then.  There is also SUPPORT. I recently learned about an incredible book: Silver Lining Companion Guide, to help breast cancer patients and their families through the experience. Right now, Allstate is on a mission to help every woman diagnosed with breast cancer by offering a free Silver Lining Companion Guide. The Companion Guide includes practical tips, important information and inspiration.

Silver Linings shared in the Companion Guide do not take away the confusion, pain and emotions that often come with a cancer diagnosis, but they do provide the balance, perspective and hope needed to get through the difficult times.

No one should have to go it alone.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with breast cancer

  • Visit Allstate.com/SilverLining to download the free guide and learn more.
  • The Guide is also available for pick-up at select Allstate agencies nationwide.
  • The Guide is available in both English and Spanish
