While I travel quite often, I realize that some destinations just lend themselves to family travel, others are great solo getaways, many are romantic, and then there are the girlfriend getaways. I suppose that almost ALL of the places that I’ve traveled are good for at least 75% of the above, but I much prefer matching the mood to the moment when it comes to travel.
With the holidays quickly approaching, and the “S” family getting ready to go away for 2 weeks, I started to think about how I wish that we were heading to Aruba, vs. stuffing 3 adults and a dog in the car for a 1700 mile road trip. I’d much rather be planning to head to the airport for a quick 3 hour flight from South Florida (rather than 3 days in the car).
Where I’d Stay
My #1 choice for the family would HAVE to be the Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort in Oranjestad. With rich colonial architecture the suites offer more of a luxury apartment feel than a hotel room, with PLENTY of room for the family to relax. With Eagle Beach steps away from your front door, you’ll be at one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. The locale is perfect for doing just about everything and with the bicycles available for rent at this resort, you’ll be able to enjoy the island as you peacefully pedal around town, or just relax and sit by the pool, go snorkeling, or even have a romantic dinner for just you and your hubby at Passions on the Beach (a toes in the sand dining experience).
Favorite spot to take the kids to eat
ZeeRover is hands down the BEST place to get authentic, fresh fish in a family friendly atmosphere. You’ll sit on the docks as you watch the fisherman bring your food directly from the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean to the kitchen. Dine at family style tables along with the locals. This place is casual, casual, casual with food brought to the table in baskets (order your food by the pound), and a sink available to wash your hands on the docks after you’ve finished licking your fingers.
Family Activity
The entire family can fit into the four-seater UTV available from DePalm Tours. The kids will squeal as you explore Arikok National Park from the GOLD MINES (maybe you’ll find a nugget) through the rocky terrain, and along the rugged coastline where beach meets desert.
The Beach
A trip to Aruba is really all about the beach, and with all of that beautiful coastline you can choose from snorkeling at Baby Beach with JADS, to windsurfing, paddle-boarding, or just sitting in the sand while the kids play in the waves.
So, WHY am I packing everyone into a car and driving to the COLD WEATHER when I could be in Aruba? I keep asking myself that question over and over.
I was a recent guest of the Aruba Tourism Dept., all opinions are strictly my own.
