Discovering the Unexpected in Winston-Salem

Getting ready to explore Winston-Salem by Segway

Getting ready to explore Winston-Salem by Segway

Winston-Salem.  It is a city most of us have heard of, but if you haven’t experienced it for yourself, you probably don’t know everything it has to offer.  In fact, many people only picture it as a historic site, thanks to its important role in our nation’s past.  But Winston-Salem is so much more.  Below are just some of the unexpected things you can discover in Winston-Salem.

Special Events

You might expect things such as Civil War reenactments, but what about Pride Festival?  Or the Bookmarks Festival of Books and Authors?  Or the Dixie Classic Fair?  Winston-Salem is home to these events and more each and every year.  In fact, there is a special even almost every weekend in the city, which means that you can visit at any time of year and expect to find something fun to do.

Special Attractions

With over 150 special attractions, even if there is no big event during your trip to Winston-Salem, you will not hurt for things to do.  There are museums, such as Old Salem Museum and Gardens.  There are art galleries, such as Charlotte and Phillip Hanes Art Gallery on the beautiful Wake Forest campus.  Take a day to explore the museum and gardens at The Reynolda House, home of of Of course you have theaters, wineries, creameries, farmers’ markets, gold courses, and more.

Great Dining

Since you are in South Carolina, you can expect to find plenty of home-style Southern cooking that will leave you feeling delighted—and possibly a few pounds heavier, but hey, it’s vacation!  So, where should you dine?  As long as you stay away from the chains, it is hard to go wrong.

But if you want a few suggestions, try

  • Milner’s American Southern
  • The Porch
  • The Tavern in Old Salem – My favorite. Make sure to order the Moravian Chicken Pie
  • Foothills Brewing

Make sure to stop in to

Winkler Bakery for traditional Moravian baked goods. I brought LOTS of Moravian cookies back home to Mr. S and Ben.

Of course, the goal here is to discover the unexpected, so don’t be afraid to be adventurous.
