My brother called last week and I asked what he was doing. He told me that since semi-retiring that he’d gone back to volunteering to teach adults to read in a literacy program in Ft Lauderdale. It was something that he had done in the past, and I know he had gotten a great sense of accomplishment watching his students’ progress from sounding out simple words to reading entire books. It made me realize that it had been a while since I had done any volunteer work. At one time in my life I had taught dance at the RI School for the Deaf with a friend, putting together a dance troupe that performed throughout the community. Our Thanksgiving tradition of working in a local soup kitchen, as well as other volunteer activities seem to have fallen away as our lives became consumed with moving, a new home, and Mr. S’ progressing health issues. It’s time for me to give back again.
It is this celebration of service that AARP Foundation’s Drive to End Hunger is championing by allowing us ALL to have a way to give back. Whether it’s by donating your time as my brother does or, if you’re looking for a way to help that DOESN’T take time, making a difference in the fight against hunger by putting food on the tables of Americans aged 50+ who are affected by hunger.
Since 2011, the AARP Credit Card from Chase has donated nearly $7 million in support of the Drive to End Hunger. You and I can help them put even MORE food into the hands of the 10 million Americans aged 50+ who go hungry each year.
Don’t have the time to volunteer? You can still help by using your AARP Credit Card from Chase. Chase will donate $0.10 to the AARP foundation for every restaurant purchase made with your AARP Credit Card from Chase in support of AARP Foundation’s Drive To End Hunger-up to a total of $1.1 million in 2016.
