What does it say about us when we want to be prepared for the worst case scenario? Does it make us dark, cynical, or just realistic? In a world where so many things can very easily go wrong, sometimes a little preparedness and knowledge can take one of those little wrongs out of the picture. After all life is a constant guessing game where we never know what will be thrown at us; sometimes we get the good sometimes we get the bad but preparing for either means we are simply expecting as it so often does, for life to change.
When it comes to our health we can never be prepared enough doctors will say, and as medical research continues finding new treatments for illnesses being aware of the medical community’s progress puts us one step ahead of the game. By getting informed of the latest, most effective ways of keeping our health intact; or by staying informed on what are the new, recommended forms of treatment that doctors encourage, we are simply giving ourselves a grounded perspective in case of the worst.
Serious illnesses like heart disease, a stroke, or Alzheimer’s among others are some of the most frightening a doctor can say we may be battling. In today’s world though research has proven a special type of blood called cord blood contains powerful stem cells that have the ability to treat these illnesses. These stem cells have the ability to develop into any type of blood cell necessary for the body to regenerate itself, taking away the further threat of damage from serious illnesses.
What’s unique about cord blood is it is obtained at a baby’s birth and is a perfect match to that baby’s blood at any point in his or her life; and due to the genetic relation, it is likely any family member could also benefit from the cord blood should the need arise. This takes away the difficulty of finding a suitable blood donor, instead giving us reason to rely on ourselves and our families.
Being prepared for a health scare then doesn’t make us cynical; it makes us smart. By learning more about cord blood and other forms of medical treatment, we enable ourselves to be ready in case tragedy strikes. In this world self-reliance is a necessity; our life can’t be lived by anyone else after all.
Tammy says
I wish now that I had saved my kids’ cord blood.
Alison says
When I have a baby again I’m planning on banking the cord blood. Because you never know when you may need it! Just like buying insurance for luggage when flying! Better be safe then sorry.
Liz @ A Nut in a Nutshell says
Anymore, we have to safeguard as much as we can!
Jenn says
Preparedness is so important. I wish cord blood banking were more affordable.
Courtney says
I wanted to bank our cord blood but they actually thought I had an infection (Fever after giving birth) and had to send it for testing. 🙁 So even if I was going to bank it I wasn’t able to.
Colleen says
I would like to see it cost less, we didn’t have this option with my first two sons (I don’t believe) but more so with my daughter but never really were given much information on it.
Donna says
I was never asked about banking my son’s cord blood… but I do wish I had been more informed of it when I had him.
Kelly says
I wish I would have done this with my son.
Lolo says
I really wish I would have done this with my son. We did not have the money at the time.
