5 ways to insure a healthy start to your day

While waking up in the morning can be a challenge for some, there are several things you can do to help you feel better about starting your day. Beginning your morning on a positive note helps set the right tone for the rest of the day. Rather than reach for your phone, a cup of coffee, or the snooze button, try these five better ways to start your day the healthiest way.

Stretch

Stretching when you wake up increases your blood flow, loosens up your joints, and sends oxygen throughout your body. Even if you stretch for just a minute or two, it will help you feel more relaxed as you start the day. If you have more time, consider incorporating some yoga into your morning routine. You can take a class or find a YouTube video to help you get started.

Exercise

Just 15 to 30 minutes of exercise in the morning can help you get energized for the day. Morning exercise improves your sleep, lowers stress, and keeps you healthy. Trying a workout video, a brisk walk or run around your neighborhood, or walking or biking to work are great ways to fit some exercise into your morning routine. When you put your health first, it will help you feel better about yourself.

A relaxing shower

There is nothing quite like a relaxing morning shower to get you into the right frame of mind for the day ahead. A morning shower wakes you up by stimulating your muscles and increasing your alertness, but it also gives you the opportunity to reflect on the day ahead. Listening to music in the shower can help improve your mood and your outlook. Putting on some moisturizer and sunscreen afterwards will make your skin feel refreshed and protect it from dryness and skin cancer.

Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness means focusing on the present and giving yourself some attention before the start of a hectic day. Try to stay away from technology for a while after you wake up and focus on yourself instead of on the external world. Thinking positive thoughts, writing down your dreams, reading a motivational quote, and expressing gratitude are also great ways to ground yourself. Smiling can help improve your mood, relax your body, and lower your heart rate, and connecting with family, friends, and/or pets is another great way to get the day started with positive energy.

Eat a healthy breakfast

Starting your day off with a healthy, nutritious breakfast such as Cheerios Oat Crunch from Walmart along with some fruit, yogurt, or almond milk can provide you with the energy you need to face the tasks ahead. A high-fiber breakfast consisting of whole grain oats, fruit, and protein will boost your metabolism and keep you from overeating later in the day.
