I remember my first job. I had no experience, I was eighteen years old and I had applied to be a secretary at a funky T-shirt company. The fact that the company didn’t even have a typewriter didn’t matter to me. I was on my own and I needed the job desperately, but I was unprepared for the workforce! One day on the job and I realized that this was not the right place for me. The owner seemed a little “off”—very sleepy and drugged out. One of my coworkers did something for me that I still remember to this day: She offered me an entire wardrobe of business clothes because we wore the same size and she knew I wanted to move on to a more professional job. I had no money, business smarts, or experience in how to dress. She gave me the gift of confidence and I immediately signed up for typing lessons!
We all need a helping hand and I am all for Paying it Forward. That was many years ago, and it taught me the lesson that appearance makes for confidence and success, as well as determination and skill set. And now, Walmart and TracFone have partnered up with Dress for Success to assist women starting out. Not only do they give interview suits and a network of support to job-seeking women, but they’re also providing TracFone phones to make business calls, ace phone interviews, and keep in touch for networking.
