No matter HOW you spell it, the Festival of Lights begins the evening of December 10th this year. For those not aware of Jewish traditions, all of our holidays begin at sundown. So at about 5:30 pm here in the East on that Thursday evening, we will light for first of our Chanukah lights. Each night we add another candle to our menorah (candelabra) to commemorate each of the 8 days, we’ll be spinning the dreidel, grating our potatoes until our knuckles get raw to make latkes, and celebrating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the fierce Maccabee’s as they reclaimed the temple. We celebrate for 8 nights to mark the commemorate of the rededication of the Temple. You see, the eternal light must stay lit in the Temple and when Judah Maccabee won the Temple back in the battle over the fortress of Antonius, which guarded the Temple, the amount of oil remaining in the one flask was only enough to burn for one day, and it would take eight days to produce a new batch of pure oil. A Chanukah miracle happened, and the oil in the lamp burned for eight full days, giving them enough time to produce more oil, which is why today, we light candles for eight nights and eat foods fried in oil (like latkes and sufganiyot – jelly donuts).
To help you celebrate, we at Champagne Living have curated a guide of EIGHT of our FAVORITE distinctly HANUKKAH gifts. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do. To make it easy for you to shop, all products in this guide are linked to purchase the items.
Have a very Happy Chanukah and no matter what holidays that you celebrate, please stay safe so that we may all celebrate more holidays in years to come.
