Taking the work out of choosing wine

This site wouldn’t be called Champagne Living if I didn’t LOVE, LOVE, LOVE drinking wine…but, that doesn’t mean that I know everything there is about the wonderful grape drink. Not at all. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty much a neophite when it comes to choosing and have a tendancy to buy the same varieties and brands over and over (when I find one that I like). With a bazillion choices at the wine store, it’s difficult for me to find a new one without turning my head and seeing one with a cuter label, a better price or a cool name.

That’s why I’m LOVING my subscription to the California Wine Club. I get to try new varieties of wine from various vineyards and THEY make the choice for me each month. So far, I’ve been happy with the choices they’re making for me, and it isn’t as invasive as Match.com or eHarmony (just sayin). I’m particularly fond of the Castoro Cellars pino noir that they sent me this month along with their Gewurztraminer.  I find the Gewurtraminer to be way too sweet for me, but I’m glad that I had the opportunity to try it, so I know exactly which ones I like and which I can pass on.

The “Blind Faith” (love the name of the vineyard) Paso Robles Pinot Noir from Castoro Cellars is quite a different case. I fell in LOVE! It’s got a RICH flavor  and ends with a very clean finish. It’s very FULL for such a recent wine (2010). Now I know that at $26 a bottle, that I’d buy it again (and again and again). Had I not been sent it as part of my subscription, I’m sure that I would have passed over this one.

One of the more interesting features of having this subscription is the fact that not only do I get to learn about California’s best “Mom & Pop” wineries, but I get a wealth of information int he Uncorked Magazine that comes with each Premiere Club delivery.  I love learning about wine, how it’s aged, what it pairs well with, as well as the history..but I ESPECIALLY love that it includes a recipe that would be PERFECT to serve alongside the wine (this month was one of my favorites – Cedar Planked Salmon).

I’m sad that my next shipment will be my last as a California Wine Club blogger, but I know that it doesn’t have to end and I’m thinking of buying myself a little “gift” (extending the subscription) for the holidays. PLUS, I’m really looking forward to what they send for the HOLIDAYS. I’m probably going to subscribe to the Premier Club again. Why? Because it’s only $36.45 (plus s&h) and they ship you TWO bottles of wine at a time. You can choose between 2 reds, 2 whites or one of each delivered monthly, every other month, or even quarterly.

Want to treat yourself to a premiere club subscription?  The California Wine Club is offering my readers some GREAT discounts.

  • When you use the code: champagne at checkout – you’ll get 10% off every gift order you place (remember, Thanksgiving is right around the corner).
  • Want to join the wine club like I did? By using the same code: champagne, you’ll get 10% off of your first month of membership and a free bottle of wine added to your first months shipment.
