Protecting The Home When You Go On Vacay

Are you the kind of person to worry about just how safe the home might be before you go off on vacation? It’s a common concern, and it’s one that can be addressed easily enough. Here are a few tips to give you peace of mind so you can better enjoy your travails.

Let someone know

If you’re heading away from the home, then you can start by calling the police and notifying them that you will be off on your vacation. They may be willing to drop around the home now and then just to make sure there are no clear signs of attempted break-ins. You can also let your neighbor, a trusted friend, or a family member know. They will check on it now and then and may even be willing to sit in once in a while to make sure that everything is well. Of course, if you’re giving someone the key to your home, make sure you inform the police of that, as well.

Keep an eye on the place

No matter how long you’re leaving home, you want to make sure that it is as secure as possible. While these devices have multiple applications, going on vacation is a very good reason to invest in a security camera installation. Many of the most modern devices have smart features that you can access from anywhere in the world, too. As such, you can log-in to your online account, tap into the home’s cameras, and look over it to make sure that everything is alright.

Secure what’s most valuable

Whether you have a home security system or not, it’s likely you have some possessions that you would like to make more of a priority than others. Perhaps a few bits and bobs of jewelry that you prize more than anything else you earn. These items can be particularly valuable, so their loss can be particularly devastating, too. Invest in locks and latches that can make taking these precious items all the more difficult. Secret compartments can be a great way to keep them well hidden from the eyes of anyone who might want to take them, too.

Make it look like you’re still home

Deterrence is the best defense when it comes to criminals. The truth is that most burglars, by nature of their job, are cowardly. If they sense a presence in their home, they’re more likely to move on and look for easier prey. You can someone to house sit and check-in for you, but while they’re not there, it might be a good idea to have some light timers set up. As the name suggests, these timers will turn on your lights, particularly at night. They can be set up in multiple rooms so you can make it look like the home is still occupied and alive even when there’s no-one in it.

Don’t worry about your home’s safety and security when you’re away. Follow the tips above and enjoy your vacation without fear.
