There’s something lovely about the idea of a cosy night in. But the reality is that some evenings don’t quite hit the mark – you get home, you’re tired, you mean to relax… and somehow, you end up scrolling your phone while eating snacks you didn’t really want. Not quite the relaxing evening you had in mind, and you probably won’t feel all that great afterwards as well, making it worse.
The good news is that you don’t need a fancy routine or things to be totally perfect to make an evening feel calm and enjoyable – you can do it any time you want with a little bit of thought and planning. With that in mind, keep reading to find out more about how to create a cosy evening you’ll actually look forward to.
Let It Be Unstructured
The great thing is that cosy evenings don’t have to be planned out to the minute – some of the best ones happen when you just let things happen. Perhaps you decide to sit down with a cup of tea, and that might lead to watching a new TV show, and that might lead to listening to a podcast, and that might lead to a chat with a friend… and so on. It doesn’t actually matter what you do as long as you’re relaxing and unwinding, because that’s the ultimate goal of a nice evening indoors.
And don’t feel guilty if you don’t do anything at all and just have an early night (which is sometimes the very best thing to do), or if your TV watching doesn’t lead to anything except more of the same – it’s okay, it’s your evening.
A Little Focus Can Help
If you find it really hard to properly unwind, you’re not alone – properly switching off can feel weird at first, especially when you’re used to doing loads of things all day (even multitasking sometimes). But if you’re able to find one small thing to focus on, something that’s enjoyable and low-effort, it’s really going to help to shift the mood.
A good example is something like an online game of poker. That’s a good one to do because it’s relaxed, you can dip in and out, and there’s just enough thinking involved to keep your mind engaged without too much pressure and without it all feeling like you’re still at work. And it’s something you can do quietly in the evening that doesn’t need too much from you, so it’s ideal for unwinding and feeling calm.
Keep It Simple
The trick to a genuinely cosy evening is not overcomplicating it – you don’t need to plan something totally impressive that takes a lot of time and money to get done. In fact, trying to make it perfect kind of defeats the object because a cosy night should be easy, gentle, and something that feels good after a long day.
So if you just want to snuggle under your favourite comfy blanket with a hot drink, do it. If you want to rewatch a film you’ve seen before, do it. Maybe you just want to turn down the lights and let your brain rest for a bit doing nothing at all. Great! Do what it takes to make yourself feel good, and keep things as simple as you can.
