I have partnered with DR Vitamin Solutions on this post. I am not a doctor, I can only tell you what I do and that I spoke with my doctor about some of the supplements I take. If you plan on taking supplements please check with your doctor first.
I am not a kid anymore
It’s hard for me to say that (or even think that), but my route (to) 66 is right around the corner (in 20 days to be exact). While I will probably never ACT my age, I sometimes really feel it. Aches and pains, old diseases that lay dormant have reared their heads, and I have gotten slower and more cautious (I make Mr. S stand nearby while I climb ladders or swing from the chandelier…LOL).
Sticking to a healthy diet
It isn’t as easy as it used to be, and as I recently read in WebMD – “climbing Mount Nutrition can be tough” especially when we age. Our budgets are lower once we stop working, so we have a tendency to cut out some of the good organic foods that are expensive. Our bodies may not absorb nutrients that way they did when we were younger. We may get less natural light, get too much of one thing (wine – who me?) and too little of another (I don’t want that salad tonight). Steak may be out of the budget (bye-bye B12) and prepared foods are just easier when there’s no family to cook for anymore.
Me, My Doctor and my DR
Me – I haven’t been myself lately. On my last visit, the doctor told me to increase my Vitamin D3, and add CoQ10 as well as Magnesium. I’m very lucky to have a doctor who understands the value of supplements. He tests me twice yearly for my “D” levels, and because I complained about joint aches, he said that because I take a statin for high cholesterol (which I’ve had since childhood) that I should take CoQ10 to help me avoid feeling achy (a side effect of taking high cholesterol medication). The magnesium I take for leg cramps that wake me (I have a permanent flexion contracture in one of my knees and I can’t stretch the leg well, so I often cramp at night).
I rummaged through my medicine chest for some magnesium (I had plenty) and stole the remainder of Mr. S’ Vitamin D3 that he’s been taking for years to begin my new regimen. Since I am pretty VERY picky about where I get my supplements, and I like to know that the company is as picky as I am, with strict criteria, have shown effectiveness, and offer supplements that they would personally take or recommend to friends and family. Did I mention that I want them at a discounted price too?
My new choice for pharmaceutical formula supplements
I used to go for BHRT (Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy) and the supplements that I bought at my doctor’s office were through the roof expensive. On the other hand, the quality and effectiveness of those that I took were far superior to anything that I can pick up at my corner drugstore. DR Vitamin Solutions carry those same formulas and doctor brands that are usually found only in a professional doctor’s office like Metagenics, Mercola, Physician’s Strength, TruNiagen (which I have taken for years) and more. They even carry my favorite brand of Progesterone (Life Flo), as well as other adrenal and hormone supplements.
What I’m taking now
- I switched my CoQ10 to Quicksilver Scientific Liposomal Nanoemulsified CoQ10.
Interestingly it has to be refrigerated, which unfortunately makes my compliance a little lower because I usually keep my supplements bedside. That being said, you can feel this working as soon as you use it (I get a surge of energy). But I think that I’m going to switch back to a pill formula like the Life Extension Super-Absorbable CoQ10 (Ubiquinone)only for compliance on my part. I am willing to give up a little to ensure that I take it the way the doctor ordered.
- I began taking Optimox Iodoral IOD 12.5 to support my thyroid function.
If you follow me on social media you know the issues that I’ve been having with my doctor taking me off of my thyroid medication after being on it for over 25 years. My PCP refuses to listen to me when I tell him my symptoms, and he won’t send me for any of the more specific testings beyond TSH and T3 (even though I told him that Hashimoto’s disease runs in the family). I realize that it’s time to find a new doctor, but in the meanwhile, I’m trying to keep my thyroid as healthy as I can by supporting it with iodine and potassium.
- I am about to start taking Quicksilver Scientific Pure Micellized Pure PC for my memory
I wanted to give something new a try to see if I can help myself stay SHARP as I age. You’d think that 65 would have been the age that scared me, but it’s that social security card and Medicare at 66 that was my “in your face” moment. I knew that there were different products (some I’ve seen on TV) to support memory function, and the main ingredient in this formula is phosphatidylcholine, an essential building block of cell membranes & structures that aids in cell health, gastric health, liver detoxification, cholesterol management, neurological function. These are all things that I need as I age, so it is a better choice for me than those other drugstore supplements.
If you notice I say that I “am starting” a formula.
Why don’t I just dive in and take them all at once?
I always add ONE supplement at a time for a couple of reasons.
- I can check to see if I notice a difference from that specific formula.
- To make sure that I don’t get any side effects (I can easily rule out which product it is if I introduce them individually).
I suggest you do the same. No one told me to do that, but it’s just something that helps me rule out any questions or issues.
