Dinner with Dave

heirloom tomato sauce

What’s for dinner?

I’ve been married to Mr. “S” for over thirty years and EVERY NIGHT for the past thirty years he’s asked me the SAME QUESTION. That question. Funny thing is, that when we got married we owned restaurants and a catering company (or rather HE OWNED them and I just took food home so I wouldn’t have to cook). He’s a wonderful cook, but hasn’t seen a stove top in about 25 of those 30 years.

If I knew that he wouldn’t get upset, I’d probably say the exact same thing every night. Pasta and (fill in any protein here)…..  Pasta is one of my VERY favorite foods and since it’s just the two of us now, it’s easy (since I rarely make my own sauce…or “gravy” as my mother used to call it).

I like to try different jarred sauces and this week I had the opportunity to try a few varieties of Dave’s Gourmet sauces. Mr. “S” is a traditionalist, so for him I made pasta with chicken parmesan and finished it off with Dave’s Gourmet Red Heirloom Organic Tomato Sauce.  the flavor of the tomatoes was much more delicate than a traditional marinara.  The taste was like sauce made directly from tomatoes from the garden, not overpowering, yet still full of good flavor. This is a great everyday sauce, and one that guests would think you worked all day to make.

Later in the week when he was busy I made some ravioli and topped it with Dave’s Gourmet Butternut Squash Sauce. WHO KNEW that a sauce made with squash would be filled with garlic, onion and red peppers to round out the flavor?  I love how different it is from a traditional red sauce. I just wish that hubby would eat it (he won’t try anything that’s the least bit different).  I still have a bottle of the Masala Marinara Sauce, with South Asian style spices (like lime and coconut) that I’m holding to put over a pork tenderloin next week. I’m excited to try that one as well.

I had seen these sauces at my visits to Whole Foods and never tried them before…now, I can’t wait to try some of Dave’s OTHER varieties. I plan on keeping some of these in the pantry for when I have an impromptu dinner party. They’re a great way to impress your guests, while not slaving over a hot stove all day.

I received product to facilitate this review. All opinions are strictly my own.
