I grew up in the automobile business
My dad was a wholesale dealer and supplied used cars to dealerships from Maine to Florida. As long as I can remember, my childhood revolved around cars. I would go watch the mechanics in the shop, move cars around the lot and hang out with the transport drivers after school. I went from describing what was wrong with a car from simple sounds (like tick, tick, tick to rrrrrr) to being able to tell a mechanic what I thought was wrong with a part by the way the car drove and sound.
As I grew older my jobs included washing cars (hated that one) to doing the bookkeeping (they hated me in that one). Eventually, I took a job selling European auto parts to dealers in the US and Canada (before I left the business entirely to embrace my passion). The auto business was such an important part of my life, and my husband who was a chef when I married him eventually became an auto buyer himself, and followed in my father’s footsteps, opening up his own wholesale dealership.
The #1 Most Important Thing I Learned About Cars
A Kia can get you to the same place as a Mercedes can and I had always looked at cars as a mode of transportation and never a status symbol. It was never about the make or model (he preferred American over European cars) probably because as a dealers’ daughter I drove a different car every week for most of my life.
But no matter whether you drove a 10-year-old Ford or a brand spanking new Rolls Royce, there was one thing that my dad taught me and that is that maintaining your car is the most important thing you can do. Sticking to the manufacturer’s schedule, doing a little extra before you take a road trip, and using the best quality products that you can on your ride can keep it on the road for many years.
As a child of the 60s, I grew up fighting for environmental causes, but as a woman who needs to go, go, go, I wasn’t ready to give up my car and use my bicycle to ride for miles. I’ve learned along the way that there is a happy medium and doing what I can in day to day life makes an impact. I chose to put Havoline® PRO-RS™ in my car this week because it is a top-tier, renewable full synthetic motor oil derived from feedstock that includes 25% sustainably sourced plant-based oils.
While this motor oil has all the performance benefits of a premium full synthetic (and offers cleaning power and wear protection), it also provides environmental benefits like outstanding fuel economy, emission control, lower carbon and is a USDA Certified Bio-based Product.
Designed with a proprietary cleaning booster to provide ultimate protection, especially under harsh stop-and-go driving conditions, extreme temperatures, and heavy loads, Havoline PRO-RS exceeds the latest and most demanding industry and automaker standards. It’s 100% full synthetic performance without compromise as keeping my car on the road and performing at peak condition is not something I’m willing to compromise.
Giving my car a plant-based diet?
Heck yeah! Havoline PRO-RS is Chevron’s first renewable consumer product made with 25% sustainably and responsibly sourced plant-based oils which makes me feel good about using it. At the same time, keeping my car on the road for a long, long, time means that I’m not willing to give up what my car needs to keep the engine running strong.
Eco-Friendly Packaging
Havoline PRO-RS is available for purchase on Walmart.com (talk about convenience) and comes in Smart Change packaging of 6 quarts of oil (vs. the usual 5-quart jugs). With the environment in mind, Havoline has put a lot of thought behind every bit of this product with recyclable cardboard box packages (that are easier to store as well). The plastic bag inside the box saves 4.2 plastic bottles from going into the waste stream and is easy to pour and easy to see how much oil you have left.
I’m too much of a diva to change my own oil.
At my age, I’m not the DIY, hands-on type that I was when I was younger. So, I called my mechanic at Mike’s Performance Garage and let them know that I’ll be coming for an oil change and that I WAS BRINGING MY OWN OIL WITH ME. Fortunately, Mike is used to me asking for crazy things (like keeping my old SAAB on the road years after it should have been sent out to pasture).
Jesus was new on the job (only 3-days) and as you can see, he took care of everything for me. Since I called ahead they were prepared for me to BYO.
DIY or BYO
There’s nothing like the way your car drives after an oil change
Whether you like to get grease under your nails or are a weekly mani/pedi type, you can do what’s good for your car AND mother nature by ordering a box of Havoline PRO-RS on Walmart.com for your next oil change.
- Havoline PRO-RS is available in 0w16, 0w20, 5w20 and 5w30 weights through Walmart.com
