What I did to ensure the water I drink is clean

This post is sponsored by Sears Direct Parts.

This past year I decided NO MORE BOTTLED WATER. I had bought a new refrigerator with a water filtration system and I am quite capable of filling my glass with water from the fridge. If I want it out of a bottle, I have plenty of glass or thermal cups that take the place of all of that plastic I was wasting. Besides, the water from my refrigerator is clean, crisp, and cold.

But I want to KEEP it that way

To do that I have to change my water filter at least every six months. You may have to do this more if you have a family who uses it a lot more than we do (I am the only one who uses mine). While my husband is not a big water drinker, he does use ice and notices IMMEDIATELY if the cubes taste a little “off” to him.

What does your water filter do?

Refrigerator water filters clear contaminants in the water by forcing the water through activated carbon located inside the filters. It’s a very simple process. Water comes through the line and passes through the carbon filter. But, once the carbon inside the filter has been filtering for a while it gets covered with chlorine and other contaminants leaving you with everything in your water that you DON’T want to put into your body. You might also notice that the water is starting to pour out slower than it used to. So, every six months you need to replace it.

How difficult is it to do?

I have a Samsung fridge and mine is as simple as unscrewing the filter cover, taking out the filter, and putting a new one in. VOILA, it takes less than 2-3 minutes to do.

Remembering to change the filter

I am putting it out there – I’m REALLY, REALLY BAD at remembering when to switch it all out. I have tried writing it in a calendar, but when I switch to the next year or the date comes, and I forgot to buy a new filter I don’t do it. I decided that there had to be a better way and I did a little research.

Water Filter Subscriptions

Getting a filter sent to me every 6 months from Sears Direct Parts has made it to much easier for me. I will no longer have the “I forgot” excuse and instead there will be a new filter coming to the house automatically.

How to order

  • Choose the style of your refrigerator.
  • Select where the filter is located in your refrigerator.
  • Choose how you remove the water filter from your refrigerator.
  • Select your water filter from the results.

What to do when the new filter arrives

Install according to your manufacturer’s directions. Run about two to three gallons through the water filter (I just use a pitcher and keep refilling it). This gets out any air bubbles and keeps your system from dripping (having laminate floors and a dripping water filter can be a disaster – trust me). It also takes out any dust or residue that a fresh carbon filter may have.

Sears Water Filter Subscriptions only use NSF-certified filters, so you know that they are environmentally friendly and safe.

Are you ready to ditch the plastic? Make sure that your water filter is giving you the cleanest water it can.
