Moving in with a significant other – no matter your age or time of life – is a big step. Whether you have never lived with someone else before, or are moving in with a new partner, it is never less of a big step and is something you want to do properly. If you are moving into a new place, you might not have any furniture or accessories and this is something you want to invest in ahead of time. If you already both have items, you need to work out what you are going to keep and what you will have duplicates of. Doing this ahead of time can really help to avoid any arguments and make the process a lot smoother ahead of moving day. If you are moving in with your other half for the first time, here are a few top tips that should make the process that bit easier and more stress-free.
Make decisions together
Moving in together is a joint decision, so you want to try and work on as much together as you can. The last thing you want is one of you making all the big decisions and it ends up feeling more like their home than the other persons. Carefully think about what items you want, from modern homewares that you purchase new together, to items you already own. If you have a bed each for example, decide together which one to keep and which one to store, sell or get rid of. By both being as involved as possible it makes the process a lot easier.
Decide on different duties around the house
Moving in together can bring out a lot of surprises that you didn’t know about each other. To combat this, try and sort out your house duties ahead of time to avoid any arguments. For example, establish who will do the cooking and who will do what of the cleaning chores. Perhaps you will take it in turns? These are all things to sort out before you move in.
Try and sort out as much as you can ahead of time
The more you establish and sort out ahead of time, the easier the moving-in process will be. From deciding how you will split the bills to any decor schemes and the sort of house you want, being organized will save a lot of hassle. Sit down together and establish any ground rules and what you are looking for when you move in together. This way all your cards are on the table and you won’t have any unexpected surprises.
These are just a few top tips that should help you when you are moving in with your other half for the first time.
