You know how I love cruising. I already have my next THREE cruises booked (June, November, and December), but today is not about me or my vacations. Today I have something really special to tell you. It’s one of those feel-good things (and we can all use a little “feel-good” these days) that makes you pause and smile, especially if you’ve ever known a truly amazing teacher (and haven’t we all?). In our family, it’s my sister-in-law Shelley (now retired). She worked for many years teaching in Rhode Island, only to move to Florida to “retire” and go BACK to work until she retired a second time (she’s now back up in RI, and I’m betting that she goes back, even if it’s to sub).
In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week (May 5–9, 2025), Norwegian Cruise Line® (yep, NCL—the cruise line we know and love for their beautiful ships and incredible itineraries and MY FAVORITE SHOWS at sea) is bringing back one of their most touching programs: Norwegian’s Giving Joy®. And if you’re a teacher, or you know someone who is, this could be a golden opportunity.
Let me break it down for you because I know some of you either are educators or you’ve got a favorite teacher in your life—maybe a friend, spouse, grandchild, or that one unforgettable mentor who changed your life forever.

So, what is Norwegian’s Giving Joy all about?
Between May 5 and May 31, 2025, anyone (yes, you!) can nominate a certified or accredited educator in the U.S. or Canada for a chance to win a free cruise vacation. Twenty teachers will be selected to receive a 3- or 4-day cruise for two, and three of those will be named Grand Prize winners, earning them an invite to the christening voyage of NCL’s brand-new ship, the Norwegian Luna™, next spring.
Now, this isn’t just some random sweepstakes. This is about celebrating the impact teachers make every single day. NCL is asking people to submit heartfelt nominations that show how a teacher has made a lasting difference—how they’ve inspired students, supported their communities, adapted to challenges, and brought creative, compassionate energy into the classroom.
I love that. It’s not about test scores or report cards—it’s about heart, dedication, and the kind of love that fuels real learning.
How do you nominate a teacher?
It’s easy: go to www.nclgivingjoy.com and fill out a quick nomination form. You’ll want to share your teacher’s story—the more personal and heartfelt, the better.
NCL has put together a panel of judges (including some of their leadership team and partners) to review the submissions based on impact, innovation, and inspiration. I don’t envy them; choosing from what will surely be hundreds of beautiful stories won’t be easy!
What do the winners get?
Here’s where it gets exciting.
-
The top 20 teachers will receive a 3- or 4-day cruise for two—a well-earned getaway to relax and recharge.
-
The top three teachers will also get an exclusive invite to the christening of the Norwegian Luna™, set to debut in Spring 2026.

And let me tell you, this ship is no ordinary vessel. It’s the sister ship to the gorgeous Norwegian Aqua™, and it’ll feature cutting-edge experiences like the Aqua Slidecoaster—a waterslide and a rollercoaster in one. (Because why not?)
-
There’s also a new Thai specialty restaurant called Sukhothai, a plant-based eatery (Planterie) at the Indulge Food Hall, and dreamy Caribbean itineraries to places like Puerto Plata, Tortola, St. Thomas, and NCL’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay, which is getting some fabulous upgrades too. A new pier, big pool area, a splash zone for kids, and of course, a bar—because even paradise needs piña coladas.
Doesn’t that sound like a teacher’s dream come true? After years of pouring themselves into others, this is one heck of a “thank you.”
A Word from a Past Winner
I want to share a little quote from Nancy Altimore, a 2024 winner who teaches at Pembroke Pines Charter High School here in Florida:
“The NCL family, through its Giving Joy Program, celebrates educators and provides them with an incredible opportunity to travel. It was such a joy to be a Norwegian’s Giving Joy winner and experience a pampered celebration for doing something I love – teaching!”
Isn’t that lovely? And it’s true—travel heals and revives the soul. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: we often underestimate how much rest and wonder can re-energize a person. Our teachers deserve that and more. As parents we know how our children can be, imagine trying to keep the attention of a room FULL of them.
And Here’s Something You May Not Know…
NCL isn’t just saying “thanks” during Teacher Appreciation Week. They offer educators an exclusive year-round discount too!
If you’re a verified teacher, you can get:
-
5% off any NCL cruise (from anywhere in the world)
-
$50 onboard credit to use toward spa treatments, cocktails, excursions, or that cute necklace you’ve been eyeing in the ship’s boutique
This applies to PreK-12 teachers, principals, college professors, and even school support staff. If you’re in education, you’re in.

Why This Matters
I have been in their shoes. I was a drama teacher in the Barrington School system many years ago and worked for the RI State Council on the Arts training teachers to use theater arts in the classroom as a teaching aid. Some of my dearest friends, former coworkers, and family members have spent their lives in classrooms. I’ve seen firsthand the long hours, the emotional weight, the creativity it takes to meet students where they are, and the fierce passion it takes to keep showing up—day after day, year after year.
It’s no exaggeration to say that great teachers change lives. I can name a few who changed mine (yes, you, Mrs. M) Can you?
That’s why I think this program is so special—it’s not just about sending someone on a trip (although that’s an incredible gift). It’s about recognizing the people who make our world better in quiet, powerful ways.
Let’s Spread the Word
If you know a teacher who deserves a little joy—maybe even a cruise!—please share this with them. Or nominate them yourself! You’ve got until May 31st, and trust me, your words could mean the world to someone.
Here’s that link again: www.nclgivingjoy.com
And if you’re a teacher reading this, THANK YOU. Truly. Your work matters. You are deeply appreciated, not just this week but always.
Now let’s get some of you sailing into the sunset with a mojito in hand, shall we?
