One easy way to stay in shape, and to explore the world at the same time, is to set out on foot. Walking is low-impact, accessible, and great for both your mental and physical health. What’s more, with the help of modern applications like Strava, we can track every step along the way and share it with our friends and family.
But it’s fair to say that not every path you walk will be as memorable as some of the best in the country – and beyond it. If you want to get the most from your adventures, it’s worth seeking out the best available trails. So, what are the options?

Coastal Paths
Walking beside the sea, accompanied by the tang of salt and the sound of surf, can be intensely relaxing. In the United States, you might consider the West Coast; the trip along California’s Lost Coast Trail is always worth taking. If you’re heading to Australia, then you might start walking in Bondi and head along the water to Coogee.
Forest Trails
If you want to go for a walk, then it’s often a good idea to find a suitable stretch of woodland. This is where many of the United States’ national parks really stand apart. The Alum Cave Trail is enormously popular, and will allow you to walk through the iconic Arch Rock.
Of course, Europe also has plenty of amazing forest locations to choose from. In Germany, the iconic Black Forest Panorama route will present you with sweeping views of seemingly endless pine.

Mountain Adventures
For those in search of a challenge, the right grueling vertical climb might be exactly what’s called for. But it’s possible to enjoy an amazing mountain vista without being an expert hiker. Many of Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park trails are quite accessible. If you’re heading overseas, then you might consider the tallest peak in Europe. Mont Blanc hiking tours are a great way to see the Alps.

Urban Explorations
If you head for a city break, then you’ll probably end up doing a lot of walking. If you pick the right city, then you might be able to navigate the worthwhile parts without setting foot on a subway train or a taxi. The hilly neighborhoods and the waterfront in Seattle might be worth visiting. In Lisbon, there are a number of tiled streets and plenty of elevated viewpoints, called miradouros, to discover.
Island Walks
If you travel to an island paradise, then it might be that the best (or only) way to see certain parts of it is to head out on foot. Of course, if you’re keeping your holiday domestic, then Hawaii, and the Waihee Ridge Trail in Maui, is the only way to go. If you’re heading into the Atlantic, then the famous levada walks in Madeira might appeal, too!
