Sometimes you have a craving for a little Mexican food, and sometimes you want to sit down and enjoy an entire fiesta in a big way. Whichever it is that you’re in the mood for, Dennis Max has it all plated for you and ready to enjoy in a cool as can be California style cantina – The Mexican. The street location may say Boca Raton, but you’ll be stoked to find an old VW bus (yes, it’s a tortilla station) parked right INSIDE this fun eating and drinking establishment that feels like it was transported from Dennis’ surfer days in Southern California.
The mural by artist Ruben Ubiera looms over diners, with its grafitiesque quality, and vivid hues of blue on white, setting the mood for things to come. With classics from “my era” jammin’ over the speakers (we were treated to The Beatles and more), I felt RIGHT AT HOME.
AND THEN THERE’S THE FOOD!
Dennis loves his farm to fork philosophy and frankly SO DO I. There’s nothing like food that’s fresh from the farm, especially when it’s from Florida’s LOCAL farmers. This is street food brought to a new level.
From the freshly made guacamole that you order to taste to those FABULOUSLY DELICIOUS Enchiladas Rancheras with rich slow roasted beef short ribs this is no ORDINARY Mexican food. You’ll recognize the names, but the flavors – OH MY. Add to this the fab tequila bar that includes the world’s FRESHEST margarita, to a menu of mojitos, margaritas, and cervezas, and you’ll find yourself spending more time here than you may have planned! For the non-alcoholic drinkers they have the sweet Mexican Coca-Cola and Jarritos sodas.
My menu favorites?
- The ceviche de la casa with it’s sublime snapper made with citrus juice, chilies, onions, cilantro, and corn, and served with freshly made tortilla chips to start.
- The empanadas are to die for, but they’re SO BIG that you may want to order them when you want a drink and a bite, because they’ll ruin your appetite for what’s to come.
- For dinner, just hand over a plate of the enchiladas rancheras and don’t talk to me til I’m done. You’ll be sopping up every last bite.
- Leave room for dessert! I’d suggest the churros with an amazing chocolate sauce or the bread pudding – better yet, order both and share.
