Cutbacks, cutbacks, cutbacks. There was a time when art, theatre, music and dance were crucial in your child’s education. When learning or allowing SELF EXPRESSION was as an important part of the teaching/learning process as learning algebra, western history and all of the other topics that they study in school. Coming from a very strong arts background and watching schools cut out these programs one by one saddens me. Thankfully the National Arts Education Public Awareness Campaign is trying to do something about it.
In the meantime there are some GREAT programs that we as parents can get involved in, to expose our kids to the Arts.
For those in and around the NYC area (or if you plan on visiting) the Broadway Theatre League is sponsoring Kids’ Night on Broadway® 2009. When you purchase an adult ticket your 6-18 year old child can go to a GREAT BROADWAY show for FREE. If you remember a few months ago, I had written about a similar program that they offer for adults once a yeat. The great thing about the children’s program is that they are going to continue this on a MONTHLY basis. I believe that you can get these tickets NOW, after that you’ll be able to get them 2 months in advance of future performance dates.
