I was taught…
You can do anything, be anything, go anywhere you want in life. All you have to do is follow the directions. That was what my mother taught me. That guidance has served me well for the past 62 years, and as a result I’ve never been afraid to take the leap of living my dreams.
A gentle force
Sweet and elegant on the outside, my mother took charge and made sure that our family always flourished – financially, creatively, spiritually, and lovingly. She taught me how to take what little money I had and invest for my future. She encouraged me to become a dancer and later an actress. She fostered our traditional religious upbringing, and later supported me when the teachings of a guru drew me to an ashram for my spiritual well being, and she taught me what love was….the kind that allows you to feel without boundaries. She had a powerful influence over all whose lives she touched.
Business woman
While my dad was the breadwinner, she supported him by taking charge of the finances of his business. She tucked away a few dollars from the “food money” each week and bought rental property, investments, and saved. Watching and learning from her was always inspiring, especially as a woman. I learned to rely on myself for support, to be fiercely independent, and to go into the world without fear.
Living with gusto
While my mother did things quietly, I am quite the opposite. I live my life out loud…first on the stage and now online. It is one of the keys to my success. I know now, that I could not have had the amazing experiences that I’ve had in life had I not learned at a young age that NOTHING was IMPOSSIBLE.
I have become my mother
In my own way, with my own twist, I have stepped into the shoes that she set out for me when I was young. Looking back, I realize just how incredibly blessed I was to have such a powerful woman guiding me, and having the courage and strength to keep balance in our lives, and TEACH us the skills that we needed to succeed.
Zenni Optical
It took a blog post from an eyewear company to make stop and think. They prompted me to write about strong women leader
s who have influenced me. It made me take a minute and get introspective about the incredible impact my mother had on me as a woman. It’s funny how there are times when an unexpected post can do that.
