I kill plants
There I said it. I am a killer. Every year I head to my local nursery and drop an easy $250, only to wonder why my vision of a magical secret garden has turned into the nightmare of the neighborhood. How is it that my next door neighbor’s garden is full of vegetables and flowers and my plants don’t produce anything? I gave up.
I turned to an indoor garden
And, guess what happened? While I was able to keep a few alive, I still was turning into Jack the Plant Ripper. Somewhere in the dark of night, my monster plant was becoming a monster to keep alive, my African violets were running for the border and my air plant started gasping. I wanted so badly to have a green thumb like my mother who surrounded us with beautiful plants.
I started to FAKE IT!
For the past 7 years I have wanted a large glorious Boston Fern above the soaking tub in my bathroom and while it’s nice and humid in there, the window is partially blocked by bushes, and the ceiling is so high that it makes it difficult to water anything. Plus, who wants brown fern fronds floating along with their bubbles? Not me.
Finding a fake that actually LOOKS fake was an easy task, but finding one that looks real enough to make me look like a master gardener, well that was actually easy as well because I have a secret fake it source.
Nearly Natural
Just as the name says, the beautiful artificial plants available at Nearly Natural are so natural looking that you’d have to be like a jeweler looking through a diamond loop inspecting the stone to know the difference. I ordered a LARGE plant and was actually a little scared that something this big would look like a Chinatown designer bag special. You know the kind I mean, those bags who SCREAM, I bought this cheap and it’s made of plastic with the letters in the wrong place.
Let’s just say it was the squeal heard around the neighborhood. As I unpacked the massive box, I was a little overwhelmed. I really hadn’t considered just how large 39″ was, but as I removed it from the box, the forest green fronds fell into place and began to hang gracefully around the elegant metal bowl that it arrived in. One of the first things that I noticed was that in order to make their plants look absolutely life-like, the fronds are created not as a solid, but each silk leaf has a realistic-looking darker stem inside the lighter green leaf.
Never worry about poisonous leaves when you have pets. I was constantly googling any plant that I brought into the house because Baby the Bull Terrier might eat them and I worried.
Real looking with the weight of a true plant, I can soak in my tub with the feeling like I’m surrounded by luxury. There is absolutely NO SKIMPING when it comes to how full the fern is, and if anything, it’s actually more lush than the ones that hang from the metal stands in the garden shop that I USED to frequent.
Lush Greenery with no green thumb
Nearly Natural actually gives me the best of both worlds. I am finally surrounded by plants that brighten up my space (and my spirits) without the stress of knowing that someday soon I’ll have to say goodbye to them. I can go away on vacation without asking a neighbor (or my husband) to water them, and there is never the disappointment that comes with leaves that turn brown and fall to the ground.
Nearly Natural plants and trees make great gifts for everyone from

I love my fern so much that I’ve already created a wish list
- I’ve been wanting an olive tree for my newly furnished covered pool deck.
- Orchids for the guest bathroom (that don’t lose their bloom when I move them)
- A peony arrangement for the front hall table (yes, they have flowers as well)
The holidays are coming
It’s a great time to pick up some greenery for your front door and that tablescape you’ve always wanted to create (Thanksgiving is right around the corner).
