DIY Tasks That Everybody Can Do (Even Beginners!)

DIY isn’t for everybody. Some people don’t enjoy it or simply don’t have the time to complete DIY at home and would prefer to outsource these tasks to professionals.

But before you become a self-proclaimed DIY hater, give this article a read! There are plenty of DIY tasks that are quick and easy enough for anybody to complete, regardless of their previous DIY experience. You might even begin to enjoy DIY after a while and it’s the perfect way to save money when you want to make your property look more expensive.

In this article, we’re going to cover some of these beginner-friendly tasks. Give some of them a try so you can start expanding your DIY skill set and updating your home.

Fitting a Handrail

If you require a handrail in your home, whether this is for medical reasons or personal preferences, you probably don’t need to outsource this task to a professional. This is certainly something that you can do by yourself, and it should only take a few hours.

You’ll need to know how to measure a handrail so you can find one that fits into your home perfectly. Once you’ve purchased the right-sized handrail, you’ll need to drill the appropriate holes into the walls and use screws to secure your handrail in place.

Installing an Alarm System

Fitting an alarm system on your property increases your safety and security at home. Although some alarm systems can be expensive to purchase, you can save money by installing them yourself.

The installation process will be specific to what’s in your alarm system package, and the manufacturer should include instructions with your purchase. Common security system packages include:

  • Outdoor cameras
  • Outdoor notion-sensor lighting
  • Smart doorbells
  • Smart locks
  • Sound alarm

Fitting New Locks

It’s good practice to change the locks on your property when your first move in and every decade or so after that to maximize your safety, and it’s another quick and simple DIY task that most people can complete by themselves.

You’ll need to purchase the right-sized locks for your doors (and windows if you’re also changing these) so they fit appropriately. Once you’ve removed the old locks, all you need to do is slide the new lock in place and secure it.

Painting Your Walls

Painting is often something that people outsource because it’s time-consuming and messy. However, it’s a relatively simple task that requires minimal equipment.

If you find a shabby and chipped wall in your home, get yourself a set of paintbrushes, a roller, and a suitable tin of paint. Put on some old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and give this task a go yourself!

Often, painting skills come with practice. The more walls you paint, the better you’ll become and the quicker you’ll be each time! Don’t be afraid of messing up. This is all part of the fun of DIY and you can always repaint the wall if you’re not happy with your initial attempt.
