Fun doesn’t need a special occasion. It doesn’t have to be earned. It’s not something reserved for weekends or vacations. Fun is essential—it lightens the load, lifts your spirit, and reconnects you with joy. Once a week, I make it a point to do something just for the fun of it. No agenda. No productivity. Just play.
Here’s how I keep the fun alive—on purpose.

1. Tee Off the Routine
Once a week, my husband goes outside and hits balls at the range. He doesn’t even want to play a round of golf, because at our age it’s become more difficult (and frustrating), but hitting balls is still FUN. Now and then, I’ll join him and we’ll split a large bucket. Going to the range and “banging a bucket” is non-competitive and fun for me. It clears my head, gets me moving, and puts me in that rare headspace where the only decision that matters is “driver or 7 iron?” Mr. S, on the other hand, is out there daily. He absolutely LOVES golf, and while at 73 years old, it’s gotten more difficult for him to pivot or turn for a good swing (and the stamina is GONE), that doesn’t mean that chipping and putting and driving aren’t fun, just not 18 holes of it.
My tip: At the range, you don’t have to worry about score. Let it be about sunshine, movement, and a good excuse to laugh at your slice.

What I Use: I recently discovered Volleybird. You know I love a good subscription box, and I recently checked out Volleybird. I know it sounds like it’s for another sport (it is), but they have a fun box for golfers as well. Not only is it fun to get a package every season, but you’ll find all sorts of GREAT PRODUCT that’s top of the line.

This season included great gear from birdiegirl including a makeup case and a magnetic towel.
Boxes are curated specifically for your favorite sport, including:
- Padel
- Golf – my FAVE
- Tennis
- Pickelball – which I know a LOT of you love

My box had practical gear as well like ball wipes & a club cleaning tool that hooks on your golf bag.
If you’ve got a golf, tennis, paddleball, or padel lover on your list (or if that’s you — no judgment here), Volleybird might just be your new obsession. This subscription box is like a personal shopper for athletes who love to play hard and look good doing it. Each box is curated for your sport of choice and tailored to your gender and size — think replenished gear like fresh golf balls and tees, stylish apparel, performance accessories, training aids, and fun new finds that make every game feel fresh. The best part? You won’t find tacky logos plastered all over everything — just high-quality, functional items you’ll actually use.

I LOVED the pink pom-pom socks, deodorant and the collectible Barbie Putt Buddies Divot Tool & Ball Marker.
You can grab a single box for $130, or choose to Subscribe & Save for a much better deal at only $117 per box, delivered every 60 days. Volleybird makes it easy to manage your subscription: cancel anytime, switch sports between deliveries, or even send a box as a gift. It’s perfect for holidays, birthdays, or anniversaries, basically, for anyone who deserves something a little more exciting than another gift card. Choose from the Pay-As-You-Go option or pre-pay for three boxes and save even more.

Sport Boxes Are Seasonal – so every 60 Days a New Box Is Dropped!!!!
- Whichever FUN sport you enjoy, Volleybird is a total win on and off the court.

2. Movie Night, But Make It Sacred
Once in a while, I pick a night to go to the movies with real popcorn, real seats, no distractions. There’s something magical about sitting in the dark, getting lost in someone else’s story for two hours.
My tip: I keep a running list of films I want to see. Bonus points for trying a genre I don’t usually go for. (Yes, even the cheesy rom-coms.)

3. Date Night = Fun Night
Once a week, I plan a date night. Whether it’s dinner out, live music, or just making cocktails at home while dancing in the kitchen, it’s a reset button for the soul (and the relationship).
My tip: Alternate who plans it. Surprise is part of the fun.

4. Play Hooky (Responsibly)
Fun can be spontaneous. Once a week, I “steal” a pocket of time for something indulgent. Maybe it’s a long lunch, a nap out in the sun by my pool, a midday ice cream cone. It’s a tiny rebellion against the rush.
My tip: Schedule it if you have to. Call it what it is: a play appointment.

5. Try a Game You Haven’t Played Since… Who Knows When
Board games, card games, trivia, bowling, mini golf, do you remember those? Once a week, I bring back something silly and light. It’s amazing how much fun lives in the stuff we used to do just because.
My tip: Keep a “just for fun” kit. Maybe it’s cards, puzzles, a frisbee, or whatever makes you laugh, compete, or forget what time it is.
What I do: My husband and I love playing backgammon, and we pull out our backgammon board maybe every few months. We bet each other with things like which one of us is cleaning up after dinner (a fun wager).
Fun Doesn’t Just Happen—You Make Room for It.
It’s easy to let fun fall off the to-do list. But the more you make space for it, the more vibrant life becomes. Fun isn’t fluff. It’s how we stay connected—to ourselves, to each other, to the moment.
So this week, carve out time for something that serves no purpose but joy.
Because fun isn’t a luxury—it’s a ritual.
