Upgrading your home can be a pretty big project. From full scale renovations to new extensions jutting out into the garden, there’s a lot of work to be done to achieve the dream home you’re really going for!
However, there are also plenty of easy ways to upgrade your home. Small changes here and there can make a big difference in the way your home looks and functions, and you can get a lot more practicality and enjoyment out of your surroundings.
That’s why we recommend the four upgrades below. You can get them done in a weekend with the right tool box on hand, and once you’ve cleared up the mess and taken the protective gloves off, you’ll be very proud of the space you’ve made.
Install New Faucets
If you step into the bathroom and the first thing you notice is the dullness of the faucets, maybe it’s time to rip them out and install new ones? Or maybe you notice there’s a lot of scum, rust, and/or mold collected on them and around them? Either way, you don’t like the effect it’s leaving on the bathroom as a whole.
That’s why you should head down to the nearest DIY store and grab some new faucets. You can buy these in whatever colour and design you like, and it should be quite easy to install them considering the amount of tutorials you can find online.
Take your time screwing it in and making sure it’s properly connected to the plumbing – although you may want to turn the water off while you fiddle with the faucet and make sure it works right!
Reface Kitchen Cabinets
Your kitchen is one of the biggest and most significant rooms in the whole home. As such, upgrades should focus on this one space in particular – you’ll get a lot more bang for your interior design buck!
To get started with something small and easy, get involved with cabinet refacing. This way you don’t need to rip out any cabinets or replace them with new ones. You just need to pull off the doors, or sand them down and repaint them, and then pop a new handle on each. Make sure you polish any metalwork to leave them shiny once you’ve nailed everything in!
Once this project is complete, you can walk into your kitchen and end up feeling like you’ve walked into a totally unfamiliar space. Whatever aesthetic you like, whether vintage 60s or sleek and modern, a bit of refacing will provide the kitchen with a much more cohesive design.
Change the Lampshades
You’ve probably got plenty of lighting around the house, so why not change the lampshades for a very quick and easy upgrade to your space? Any lamp, including table, standing, and overhead, can be completely changed with a new lampshade attached.
Make sure the new lampshades you buy reveal the light in a way you find pleasing and make sure you get them in the right texture and coloring to suit the rest of the room around them. If this means you need dark blue shades to fit in with the rest of the nautical theme, so be it!
Once you pull the old shades off, be sure to have a microfiber cloth on hand to remove any dust from the inside of the lamp or the bulb it was protecting. Then pop the new one on top – simple!
Knock in a Few More Shelves
It’s never a bad thing to have more shelves around the house. This means you get a lot more storage to pop vases, books, and knick-knacks on, which always makes a house feel more homely. Seeing as shelves can be made in a space of five minutes by sawing a piece of wood in two and sanding down the edges, it won’t take you long to get this upgrade done.
Pop shelves wherever there’s a spare bit of wall. In the corner behind the sofa, in the space between the kitchen cabinets, and above the doors between rooms. If you want to put up floating shelves, make sure you use long nails!
Upgrading your home isn’t about big budgets and a lengthy project scale. Sometimes you can do little things to give your interior a dramatic facelift, which will then make you feel a lot better about the home you live in. So, give the above projects a try and see how they change the perception of your space!
