I’ve been cruising for years. I’ve sailed with my husband, with friends, and even by myself on working cruises. But lately, I’ve been thinking about cruising a little differently.
I have a grandson who turns three in a week and has never set foot on a cruise ship. The last time he came for the ride to drop me off at the port for a cruise he cried that he wanted to go on the boat with Nana Zee and Grandpa too. He’s potty trained now, so I’ve been thinking a LOT about it. Like every grandparent, I’ve already started imagining that first sailing. I can picture his face the first time he sets foot on a ship that’s bigger than any building he’s ever known. The excitement of unlimited ice cream. The kids club. The pools. The sheer wonder that only little kids seem to experience.
And now Norwegian Cruise Line has given me one more reason to start planning.
Beginning September 4, 2026, Great Tides Waterpark opens on Great Stirrup Cay, and honestly, it feels like it was designed with families exactly like ours in mind.
Not just kids.
Not just grandparents.
Everyone.
The Vacation Where Nobody Has to Compromise
One of the hardest things about planning a family vacation is making everyone happy. Your grandson wants splash pads. Your son wants somewhere to grab a cold beer. Your daughter-in-law wants a comfortable cabana. Your spouse wants to relax by the water. And somewhere in all of that, you’d like to spend time together instead of splitting up all day.
That’s what stood out to me about Great Tides Waterpark.
Instead of creating another waterpark that’s all about screaming down giant slides, Norwegian has created nearly six acres of attractions where every generation can build their own idea of what their best day ever is. As grandparents, we know that’s the real luxury.
Watching Memories Being Made

There’s something magical about introducing your grandchildren to experiences they’ve never had before. I remember taking my son on his first cruise at about the age of 10 (and he’s told me in detail over 30 years later everything he remembers about that cruise). I imagine holding my grandson’s hand as we walk into Splash Cay, the colorful splash zone built especially for kids his age.
He’ll probably spend an hour doing exactly what toddlers do best. Running through fountains, laughing at buckets dumping water overhead, and insisting on doing the same thing fifty-seven times because it’s still funny every single time. And honestly? I’m happy watching him do it over and over and over again (and yes, I’ll be laughing right along with him). Those are the moments that become family stories, just like the ones my son had.
When Mom and Dad Want Adventure
Of course, while Grandpa and I are happily chasing our little guy around Splash Cay, his parents might disappear for a little while. I wouldn’t blame them. They get a break for a bit, and we get what we want (more Jack time).

Great Tides Waterpark features 19 waterslides, including some attractions that sound like they belong at a theme park in Orlando. There’s The Great Slide, the Caribbean’s only four-person body slide, perfect for racing as a family. Then there’s Tidal Tower, featuring the Caribbean’s first dual Master Blaster water coaster. But, instead of simply sliding downhill, powerful water jets actually push you uphill before sending you twisting around the course. It sounds like the start of the AquaSlideCoaster that I got to ride on the Norwegian Luna.
I have a feeling my son would head there first.
And Then There’s Me…
Now, let’s talk about those cliff jumps. The first time I read that Great Tides Waterpark would feature the industry’s only cliff jumps, my immediate thought was, “Absolutely not.” Then I thought…”…maybe.” They’re between 10 and 15 feet high, making them the tallest cliff jumps in the Caribbean.
Will I actually jump? Ask me after I’ve watched a few other brave souls go first. I mean, I felt the exact same way when none of my friends would go down the AquaSlide Coaster Fortunately, if courage fails me, there’s a much easier option.
The Grotto Bar sits right below the jumps, giving spectators front-row seats while enjoying a tropical cocktail. That sounds like a pretty good backup plan for me (but, you never know…because I just might do BOTH).
The River I Already Know I’ll Love

Wandering River Immersive Tunnel at Great Tides Waterpark
If you know me, you know I don’t need nonstop adrenaline. Give me a comfortable float, sunshine, beautiful scenery, and a cold drink, and I’m perfectly content.
That’s exactly why The Wandering River may become my favorite spot on the island. It’s not your typical lazy river. Norwegian has created an immersive floating experience that even includes a tunnel, making the journey itself part of the attraction.
Even better?
There’s a Floataway Bar right in the river. Yes, you read that correctly. You don’t even have to leave the water to grab a drink. Since Norwegian’s unlimited beverage package extends onto Great Stirrup Cay, it’s one more perk that makes the day feel completely carefree.
I’ve Eaten on Great Stirrup Cay and the Food Is Surprisingly Good
Let’s be honest. Waterpark food doesn’t usually inspire excitement. But Norwegian clearly decided guests deserved something better.
Barbecue lovers can head to Low Tide Smoke for smoky ribs, nachos, wings, and even crispy Buffalo cauliflower. Seafood fans will want to stop at Catch of the Cay, serving shrimp baskets, chilled seafood rolls, and crispy shrimp sandwiches. Then there are the desserts.
- Bubble waffle sundaes.
- Fish-shaped waffle cones.
- Colorful soft serve.
If my grandson is anything like most three-year-olds, I’m guessing we’ll somehow end up eating ice cream twice. Maybe three times. But, who’s counting on vacation?
Of CourseThere’s Still Space to Simply Relax

One thing I appreciate is that Norwegian didn’t forget the adults who aren’t interested in waterslides. The island continues to offer beautiful beaches, luxurious Silver Cove (which has always been a favorite of mine for relaxing), beachfront cabanas, private villas, and the adults-only Vibe Shore Club.
That means if Grandpa decides he’s had enough excitement after an hour with his grandson, he can retreat to a lounger overlooking the ocean while the younger generation keeps playing. This way everyone gets the vacation they actually want.
Even Getting Ashore Is Easier
Sometimes the best improvements aren’t flashy. Norwegian’s new two-berth pier means guests can walk directly onto Great Stirrup Cay instead of waiting for tender boats. That may not sound exciting until you’ve traveled with a toddler who’s done it all and has decided it’s meltdown time.
- Less waiting.
- Less juggling strollers and beach bags.
- More time actually having fun.
Parents and grandparents alike will definitely appreciate that simple change. And, if others have grandchildren like mine, so will the other guests.
Why This Feels Different
Cruise lines have been investing heavily in their private islands for years, but Great Tides Waterpark feels like something more than another collection of waterslides. It feels like Norwegian asked one simple question:
How do we make sure every generation has an unforgettable day?
The answer isn’t giving everyone the same experience. It’s about giving everyone the choices to make for themselves.
Grandparents like me can either just relax or join in the fun.
Parents can get their thrills or unwind in a cabana.
Kids can splash until they’re completely exhausted.
And at some point during the day, the whole family gets together over lunch, ice cream, and tells stories about who was brave enough to tackle the biggest slide. To me, that’s what multi-generational travel is really about. It’s not spending every minute together; it’s about creating moments you’ll all remember long after the vacation ends.
My Bucket List Just Got a Little Longer

I don’t know exactly when my grandson’s first cruise will be. I just know I want it to happen while he’s still at that magical age where every new experience feels enormous. When a towel animal is the greatest surprise he’s ever seen. When ice cream before lunch somehow makes perfect sense. When holding Nana Zee’s hand while exploring a Caribbean island becomes a memory for both of us that we’ll talk about year after year.
With Great Tides Waterpark opening this September, Norwegian Cruise Line has made that first family cruise even more tempting. Because the best vacations aren’t always about the destinations. Sometimes they’re about watching three generations laugh together in the same place, each finding their own version of paradise.
