Living in Florida, I have learned that a trip within the state can sometimes feel like more work than flying somewhere else.
Orlando and Miami may be connected by the same highway, but anyone who has spent hours staring at brake lights on Florida’s Turnpike knows that distance is only part of the equation. Traffic, construction, airport transportation, luggage, parking, and last-minute schedule changes can turn a relatively simple Florida trip into a logistical headache.
Brightline is trying to make that journey easier with a new fare option designed for passengers traveling to or from Orlando.
Beginning September 9, 2026, Brightline travelers can choose a new FLEX fare in either SMART or PREMIUM service. The fare is intended for people who want more freedom to change or cancel their plans, but the benefits go beyond flexibility. FLEX also includes a generous luggage allowance and a complimentary airport transfer at Miami or Fort Lauderdale.
For Florida residents, international visitors, business travelers, cruise passengers, and anyone trying to connect from Orlando with South Florida, this could be a game changer.
Why This New Brightline Fare Matters
I live on Florida’s Treasure Coast, close enough to South Florida that Miami should feel accessible. Yet, for years, the thought of driving there often kept me from going. It was never about how many miles away it was. It was the fear of driving in traffic that I didn’t know. How long would it take (395 can take 15 minutes or 3 hours)? How bad would traffic be? How early would I have to leave? Where would I park? How exhausted would I be after gripping the wheel for dear life and trying to navigate the highway?
Taking Brightline from West Palm Beach changed the way I thought about visiting Miami. Instead of arriving frazzled after a stressful drive, I could sit back, relax, and let someone else do the driving. Suddenly Miami felt closer.
Grandparenting at 79 MPH
But my reason for ditching the highway is not just about avoiding traffic. It is personal.
My three-year-old grandson lives nearly two hours away by car, right near a Brightline station. Like most grandparents, I want to spend as much time with him as I can. What I do not want is to arrive tired and frazzled after fighting traffic for two hours, then face the same drive home.
Brightline gives me another possibility. I can settle into my seat, relax, and travel at speeds of up to 79 mph without gripping the steering wheel or worrying about the traffic around me. Instead of concentrating on the highway, I can read, catch up on work, or simply enjoy a little quiet time before stepping off the train ready to be Nana Z.
That is the kind of flexibility that matters in real life. Family plans can change quickly, especially when a three-year-old is involved. Someone gets sick, nap time runs late, or I decide I want to stay a little longer. A FLEX fare means the trip does not have to feel quite so rigid.
For grandparents who live in different parts of Florida from their children and grandchildren, Brightline can be more than an alternative to driving. It can make those visits feel easier, more comfortable and, hopefully, more frequent. After all, avoiding traffic is nice. Getting more time and energy with my grandson is the real benefit.
The addition of Orlando service expanded that possibility across a much larger part of Florida. Now, Brightline’s new FLEX option addresses another common concern. What happens if your plans change after you book? That question is especially important when train travel is only one part of a longer itinerary.
A flight might be delayed. A cruise could return to port later than expected. A family visit might need to be extended. An international traveler may need more time to clear customs. Even Florida residents taking a simple getaway can run into a last-minute change.
FLEX is Brightline’s answer for travelers who want more breathing room built into their reservation.
What Is Included With a Brightline FLEX Fare?
The new FLEX fare is available for trips to or from Orlando in both SMART and PREMIUM service.
Passengers who book FLEX can cancel their reservation at any time without an additional fee and receive a full refund to their original form of payment. That distinction matters. Some travel credits must be used within a specific time or with the same company, while a refund to the original payment method returns the money directly to the traveler.
FLEX passengers can also modify their trip before the day of departure by paying only the difference in fare, if there is one. On the day of departure, they can switch to another Brightline departure on the same date without a change fee.
That same-day benefit could be particularly useful for someone connecting from a flight. If the plane lands early, is delayed, or takes longer than expected to unload, the traveler has more flexibility to adjust the train reservation.
The FLEX fare also includes:
- One large bag
- Two carry-on-size bags
- One personal item
- A complimentary one-way airport transfer
The included airport transfer is available between Brightline MiamiCentral and Miami International Airport, or between Brightline’s Fort Lauderdale station and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Transportation is provided through Brightline’s Airport Connector Shuttle.
For travelers arriving in Florida with enough luggage for a cruise, an extended vacation or a winter stay, those inclusions may make FLEX more practical than simply selecting the least expensive ticket.
How FLEX Compares With SELECT and SAVER
Brightline now offers three levels of fare flexibility for Orlando travelers, although SAVER is available only in SMART service.
FLEX
FLEX offers the greatest freedom. Passengers can cancel and receive a full refund to the original payment method. They can make changes before departure by paying any fare difference, and they can switch to another departure on the same day without a change fee. It also provides the largest included luggage allowance and the complimentary airport transfer, making it perfect for travelers and cruisers.
SELECT
SELECT provides some flexibility, but with more restrictions. If a passenger cancels a SELECT ticket, 75 percent of the fare is returned as a credit to the traveler’s Brightline Wallet. It is not refunded to the original payment method. SELECT reservations can be modified, but passengers must pay a change fee as well as any applicable difference in fare. The SELECT luggage allowance includes two carry-on-size bags and one personal item.
SAVER
SAVER is Brightline’s most economical option for Orlando travel and is offered only in SMART service. The tradeoff is that the fare is much less flexible. A SAVER reservation can be canceled, but the traveler will not retain a credit. It also cannot be modified. SAVER includes one carry-on-size bag and one personal item.
The right fare will depend on the trip. Someone taking a quick, uncomplicated getaway with firm plans might be perfectly comfortable with SAVER. A traveler who wants some ability to make changes might prefer SELECT. FLEX will likely be most appealing when the itinerary involves flights, cruises, important appointments or circumstances that are harder to predict.
The Miami Airport Connection May Be the Biggest Benefit
The new FLEX fare could be particularly useful for people flying internationally through Miami.
Orlando International Airport offers the largest network in Florida, but Miami International Airport is a major gateway to Latin America, the Caribbean, and destinations around the world. Depending on the route, schedule, or price, a traveler may find a better flight from Miami even if the trip begins in Central Florida (I’m flying back from Barcelona next week through Miami even though I live closer to the West Palm Beach airport because of the price and ease of getting home the day that I wanted to).
Brightline can help connect the two cities without requiring a rental car or a long drive. With FLEX, the Airport Connector Shuttle between MiamiCentral and Miami International Airport is included in the fare.
NOTE: This does not mean travelers should book a tight connection. Trains, airport security, baggage claim and traffic between the station and airport still require enough time. However, the ability to move a Brightline reservation to another departure on the same date provides an added layer of reassurance.
And for travelers, the luggage allowance is another huge benefit. FLEX passengers can bring one large bag, two carry-on-size bags, and a personal item. For an international trip or cruise vacation, that may be much closer to what travelers are actually carrying.
A Useful Option for Cruise Travelers Like Me
Florida is home to some of the world’s busiest cruise ports, including PortMiami (which I believe is the largest in the world), Port Everglades, and Port Canaveral. Brightline’s Orlando route gives cruise passengers another way to combine Central and South Florida in a single vacation.
Someone could fly into Orlando, spend several days visiting the theme parks and then take Brightline south before sailing from Miami or Fort Lauderdale. The trip could also work in reverse, allowing travelers to add an Orlando stay after their cruise.
Cruise schedules are generally reliable, but ships can occasionally return late because of weather, port traffic, or other unexpected circumstances. FLEX does not eliminate the need to leave plenty of time between the cruise and the train, but it gives you more options if the day does not unfold exactly as planned.
For cruisers traveling with full-size luggage, the included large bag also makes FLEX worth comparing with the total cost of other fares.
SMART or PREMIUM?

I have a preference. I love the lounge, the seats, and the service on PREMIUM on Brightline, and I can still travel that way. FLEX describes the ticket’s cancellation, modification, luggage, and transportation benefits. SMART and PREMIUM describe the travel experience.
That means passengers can choose the onboard service that fits their preferences and then select the fare flexibility that fits their plans. The introduction of FLEX does not change the existing onboard or station experience associated with SMART and PREMIUM. So, I can still enjoy my lounge access (there’s something fun about pushing a button and getting a glass of champagne. I also love the comfortable seating, lounge access, snacks, beverages, and the opportunity to relax before boarding. For me, that experience is part of what makes the train feel like the beginning of the trip instead of transportation I simply have to endure.
Not every traveler needs PREMIUM, though. A SMART FLEX ticket may provide the combination some passengers want most (especially families). A more economical onboard experience paired with the freedom to change or cancel the reservation.
Look Beyond the Lowest Advertised Fare
The least expensive ticket is not always the least expensive trip.
Before booking, think about what you would lose if you had to cancel. Think about whether your schedule is firm, how much luggage you’re bringing, and whether you need transportation between the train station and airport.
A SAVER fare may be the right choice when plans are set, and you are traveling lightly. FLEX may offer better overall value when the trip has several moving parts. This is especially true for those heading to the airport for a flight. The cost of checking or transporting luggage, arranging an airport ride, and replacing a ticket after a schedule change can quickly exceed the original fare difference.
Compare the complete trip cost, not just the price displayed at the beginning of the booking process.
Making Florida Feel More Connected

Brightline currently serves Miami, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, and Orlando. For those of us who live in Florida, the service is doing more than connecting stations. It is changing the way we think about traveling around our own state.
Miami no longer has to mean gripping the steering wheel through hours of traffic. Orlando does not automatically require a long highway drive. Visitors can combine Central Florida attractions, South Florida beaches, international flights and cruise departures without renting a car for the entire trip.
Brightline’s new FLEX fare will not be necessary for everyone. Travelers with firm plans and minimal luggage may still prefer SAVER or SELECT. But for people connecting through Miami, taking an extended Florida trip, or building several forms of transportation into one itinerary, flexibility has real value.
Sometimes the best travel perk is not champagne in a lounge or an upgraded seat. It is knowing that if your plans change, your ticket can change with them.
And one of these days, I’m going to take my grandson from Fort Lauderdale to Orlando on Brightline, because his favorite thing to do is go to Funky Buddha in Oakland Park and watch the train go by. He runs to the window and stares longingly, yelling TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN…and with a toddler, you know you have to be flexible.
